The girl option for FRLG is called Leaf, not Blue, unlike her Gen1 concept art, which is all labeled at Blue.

Whats not going to change is the fact that for 20 years hes been known in English as Blue, and will continue to be in every English game release.

Names are changed in localization all the time calling him "Green" when majority of the player base know him as "Blue" through official media is just being intentionally confusing and elitist

Ash's competence changes every episode. Sinnoh has been some of his best stuff, coming up with strategies like the Counter Shield or using Dawn's spinning technique as an offensive buff for certain moves.

Red literally didn't know he could switch Pokémon until midway through his first gym battle, then later on proceeded to bring Jolteon to a Ground gym.

People love to call them by the Japanese names because:

- Manga readers had them by the original names
- People who watched Origins in sub know them by the original names as well
- Male rival wears Green clothes, not Blue
- Leaf wore Blue clothes in FRLG and Smash

So of course you won't see many people calling Giovani as Sakakai, but Green/Blue will be forever a confusing thing thanks to localization.
