What does /vp/ think about HMs? I've been replaying Platinum and it's an absolute pain having to either have 2 dedicated shitmons dragging down my team, or 3 if I want fly without Pelliper. Should we have something like Sun and Moon again in Gen 8? Or some kind of "soft-HM" like the flute from ORAS? What do you think would be best?

Ya see, HMs are crappy moves (except for Surf, Waterfall, Defog, and Whirlpool cause it traps and deals residual damage) and you can't delete them unless you talk to a certain NPC. Sometimes said NPC isn't until 6 gyms into them game were they force you to use cut and Rock smash literally before the second gym. Not being able to delete these moves is a nuisance, and that's why gen 7 has ride Pokemon

I think that the HM's should simply be one readily available edition of a variety of moves that can solve the same problems.

Cut can be used to remove small trees, but so can moves like Leaf Blade, Psycho Cut, and Flamethrower.
Actually using ANY move to clear the obstacle requires a badge for the obstacle, not the way you clear it.
HM's should also not be unforgettable. That's dumb. Maybe back in gen 1, where you could get stuck if you deposited the HM, then forgot the move, but there's no reason now.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if there were more variety to obstacles if they were handled this way.

Also, some abilities should be usable as well. A pokemon with Illuminate should be able to replicate the effects of Flash on command.

Can we just get a game where our character knows how to swim? There's hundreds of Swimmers and Divers and other fuckers in the water ready to battle us but not a single player trainer in any of the games can ever just jump in the water and swim to the next town over themselves.

Real talk, HM's have been overdue to be out or soft for a long, long time and the only reason we're having this discussion this late is because gamefreak are the biggest hacks to avoid bankruptcy in the history of everything. Two nukes only flooded the country with radiation, should have dropped more.

Based.

HMs are really just ways for pokemon to interact with their environment, and they should be implemented in a way that expresses this.

I personally like the idea of HM moves not counting towards the 4 move limit - pokemon can learn them in addition to 4 non-HM moves.

Seems that would solve pretty much everything, and wouldn't break any mon too bad (and if they would, you could just make the HMs inaccessible during battle).

Literally NOTHING wrong with HMs, just scatter them amongst your team of 6 absolute bros you're playing the story with, no need for slaves, no need for boxing and switching Pokemon out.

Who the fuck cares, it's the story mode, you're team doesn't have to be MLG, they can each takes 1-2 shit moves, and even then, some of them are good, Surf, Waterfall, Strength, Fly, decent moves when given to the right Pokemon.
I even make a game out of having all HMs covered on my team, it's fun.
The HMs are bad meme is stupid
