Can you explain to me why would you ever want to get LeGoPiLeGoEe?
If it's Kanto, play the older games.
There is no gameplay that can possibly be appealing to you in this game, trainers will be just pushovers even more than usual.
And you can't even play it competitively. If you wanted a new limited fun meta like RS200 tough luck, no abilities for you, no old items, no anything. You might as well just play RBY on smogon if that sounds appealing to you.
If it's for Leaf, jack off to pictures online.

So why the hell do you want to buy these games. Legit curious, enlighten me.

Why do people pay money for New Super Mario Bros and shit when it's the same game as before? You can't tell me with a straight face that it's actually worth the money of buying a Wii U and paying $70 for the face value of the game vs. saving your cash and just replaying what you have already.

I think people end up buying new consoles for whatever reason, and then just buy the latest games in their favorite franchises that come out for it, whether that purchase is begrudgingly so or not. You get sold on the Switch as this legitimately amazing thing, or else maybe buy it for a good game you actually do want (Splatoon 2), and then, because it feels like you need to buy more games to recoup the cost of your console, you buy more shit for it.

I have no problems with people wanting to buy the game. I do have a problem with people wanting this game or Kanto to be the penultimate Pokémon experience when later games either had better designed regions or more engaging characters.

It's like, say my favorite Disney movie is Aladdin (not that it is, just for the sake of argument). Now say they remade Aladdin from the ground up but still cel animation and also new scenes added on top of that. Why should I watch Aladdin with extra shit when I could be watching another fucking movie instead?

NSMB = A revisiting of the 2D Mario games taking the DKC approach and draws inspiration from NSMB1 loosely but borrows heavily from 3 and World. None of said installments are remakes of previous Mario games.

I don't know why you made such a retarded comparison because the shit's just not comparable. Even if you're talking about the Switch make-up port with extra shit, there's still a chance people never played the Luigi U stages let alone vanilla NSMBU.

You just buy it because you don't know what else to do with the console, because you get bored of Smash/Splatoon/something better but feel daft having only bought one game for a console.

I'm not saying it's exactly the same, but that sort of, I don't know, inertia, that leads people to buy a Mario and sort of shrug at it and say yeah it's fine, will probably be the same subconscious thought process that leads to some LGPE sales.

I've seen people say they'll buy LGPE just to tide them over until Ultimate comes out. Replaying games they already own to save the $70 doesn't seem to cross their mind.

It's partly sunk cost fallacy (insofar as the price of the console), and partly the way capitalism/marketing/conspicuous consumerism drives sales.

I'm providing an answer to OP's question, not intentionally maligning NSMB. Your point's taken, but those games certainly weren't masterpieces, they were placeholders.

No one game is worth a console and in spite of it's power, the Switch is a reasonable port machine for indies and non-AAA titles if nothing else.

Gaming is about choices. Waiting out specific franchises dulls out the point of buying a system. Are there people who bought a 3DS just for Pokémon? Maybe but the numbers that did make up a small part of the consumerbase for the system. Plus it's not like there's a one-Pokémon game per system limit.

In Ultimate's defense, K.Rool and Ridley aren't in past games and Trippy Smash Bros. Brawl was the only version you could play Snake legally, which also wasn't in HD at that. And whatever workarounds might be prescribed for playing Brawl in HD may not be a viable solution since some PCs are toasters and the price to upgrade can make the Switch + Ultimate solution seem cheaper or practical by proxy.

Not sure the point you're getting at. People lose money regardless for needs and commodities alone, choosing to buy something is at least an assertion of their taste. And really playing older franchises using new hardware comes with the territory of any game console and franchise.

Sometimes games, music, movies, books and any kind of consumable piece of work or media just are. Not every work has to be a magnum opus. That kind of mindset drives procrastinators to work less and put all their eggs in one basket and just because a company or developer produces a showstopping work doesn't mean that has to be everything they produce.

That said, it's understandable to be disappointed that installments in a long running franchise aren't the best possible form they can be or it seems like they don't have to try. That doesn't mean they're incapable of considering feedback or that they ignore the hearts of their fans. It's just a matter of which fans are the most reasonable to please. A king can't hope to please everyone, that's not a challenge that's just fact. Fans will always have conflicting opinions and some fans may have ideas that resonate more with the creators enough to validate.

Companies may make decisions that are too safe or simply just want to do something simplistic to get a product out. If people want to buy or boycott, that decision should be left to the individual on their own terms regardless of their feelings towards the company or franchise.

I think the only thing I'd like to add here – it follows from something your post made me remember but it may come across tangential – is that part of what seems to drive people to buy these games is this promise of worldbuilding/lore/etc.

I'll mention this because it's something that used to be a big reason I'd get excited to buy a new Pokemon game, to see how the newer generations would allude to previous generations, if they'd build on previous "lore", etc. and actually expand on that.

I think this is deliberate with Nintendo games in particular, because even with LGPE we're seeing Blue show up in the game trailers and people are trying to guess whether LGPE might actually be occurring chronologically *after* RB/FRLG's events.

But these games don't tell new stories. They're, for lack of a non-buzzword, rehashes of the same general formula, and Nintendo seems to be particularly keen on avoiding franchises letting their games tell stories that don't circle back so that, in the end, everything's still the same as it was before.

ORAS' New Mauville was a huge cocktease for lore and when we first saw it we had a bunch of theorizing about what AZOTH was, etc. and nothing's come of that. Silvally has a vague nod to Arceus that might've been a set-up for a DP remake if they'd gone in that direction, but it was so self-contained as to come across half-hearted.

I think ORAS' multiverse was a deliberate plot choice to this end, because it now lets them do whatever they want with the story without any real consequence. The plots will no longer have to properly interconnect or allude to each other, because they can all just be their own multiverses.

I think Metroid's a good example here – Fusion was the last game in the story that actually told a new chapter in the series, and it represents a chronological dead-end for that franchise. It's like, 15 years old, and every Metroid game since has been a remake or inconsequential interquel.

I don't think this is as relevant to Mario - no one plays these games for the story - but I *do* think there are people who buy Pokemon games for the story, wanting references/callbacks to their favorite games.

And that's where I'm cynical and disparaging – if you're excited about LGPE because Blue shows up, don't buy LGPE. By now you should know damn well GF has taken the Nintendo approach and isn't actually going to introduce anything of consequence with her outside of an inconsequential cameo in the game. She's not going to be a major character, she's not going to usher in a grand story. If you want to see Blue in a Pokemon game, go replay FRLG. Don't spend your money on LGPE expecting any real change to formula or story.
