The ideal size of the world for a Pokémon game would be two regions plus one "sub-region" akin to the Sevii Islands or Sinnoh's Battle Zone.

Two regions cant work with game progression. Just look at GSC they had to overlevel the Kanto section just to make it feel like a challenge. Also the only reason those were connected is because Kanto and Johto were originally one giant region.

What gen 8 needs is optional areas to explore in between road blocks and even areas that expand once it's post game. I mean think about it a giant Cave with an entrance to some ruins but you can't access till after you beat the elite four it opens up and there's tons of strong pokemon with an ancient legendary in slumber. Maybe even an area where a bunch of elite trainers hang out and you can go there for a tough challenge but these trainers are rouge sort of like the battle square in pyrite town so they use some really unorthodox pokemon etc.

Yeah LGPE is perfect, it doesn’t have too much stuff in there so I’m not overwhelmed!! 153 pokemon fits perfectly in my small mind, 800+ is way too much!!

It’s kind of like having my soi drinks, I have soi because regular milk hurts my tummy so I have to have something different otherwise I’d be all tummy hurt

I don't know about overleveled since the highest you had to deal with was Blue at the high 50s and every other gym sat at mid 40s. If GF made one region around the level pacing of Johto but actually had a progression and scaling in the other, then we'd have a good two region game.
It would have made for a better build up to Red as opposed to the bore that Gen 2 Kanto turned out to be.

you know the only reason GSC had 2 regions was because they wanted a sequel so they had make jhoto smaller just so they can fit in kanto and then also make that smaller.

all regions after both (except alola) we're about the same size, you just dont feel it because the map doesnt tell you.
