I definitely agree that this way of doing open world isn't enjoyable; this hack actually doesn't appeal to me at all (neither does Roaming Red, to be honest, though I know they differ in a few important ways), but I always figured that that was just because open world isn't my thing in general and I already usually have a preference towards games that are at least somewhat more guided than this. I've generally only heard this regarded positively/it seemed like people who do want open world in Pokémon thought these were fine examples of it, so I just figured this was all there was to that idea and it turned me off of the idea of open world Pokémon in general. Basically, I've been under the impression of "these games are done right and it's just not for me," whereas I'm now getting the impression that these games aren't done all that well and there's still a chance that open world WOULD be a creative and interesting direction to take Pokémon in different hands.
Seeing that people who *do* like open world *also* don't like how this was done makes me really curious as to how it could be improved or done better - what WOULD all of you want to see in an open world Pokémon game?
As someone who's less familiar with open world games as a whole, what features do you like in open world games that this doesn't pull off and how would you prefer for them to be implemented in the context of a Pokémon game?
