This is the sort of thing they should have went with. Keep the same basic silhouette, proportions, etc. ignore logic where it doesn’t work, but just make it a little visually more fitting. The anime characters with skin textures thing is just uncanny.

You can still stay honest to the designs without going full tree-squid. Like how this guy went for big expressive puppy dog eyes instead of cartoony snow globes. And adding bits that make it more familiar but don’t break the original silhouette like those skin folds. Give Gyrados gills, show charizard’s individual scales but keep it smooth like snake skin if it’s too crowded, add a supporting bone to the fins on greninja’s head so they’re not just slabs of flesh. That sort of thing.

Honestly if that guy isn't 90% of the movie I'm gonna hate it now. Mr. Mime has finally been redeemed as a pokemon, his likeability is 1000%, no longer hte creepy weirdo pokemon he's gonna become as popular as pikachu or charizard.

Does anyone else dislike how have they portrayed the pokemon but nevertheless enjoys and praises how they've went on a fresh and different direction for once? It's not my ideal pokemon world, it's too bizarre, but I will definitively watch it.

I wish they had done something else with the designs, but the alternative everyone wants is them looking like their usual cartoony selves, which doesn't work either (see The Good Dinosaur for example).

At least there's the fun concept of the regular style being that world's cartoonization of animals, just like what we do to cats, dogs, etc.

I love how Pikachu and Emolga look, though. They resemble good old-fashined plushies.

I'll give it a watch too, it looks fun.

A bit of a problem with making the more recognizable pokemon look like animals would be merchandising. You have to keep the toys recognizable for parents so they buy them for their kids instead of have them think it's just some ugly lizard toy.

They look great, but I can see how they’re actually too animal for that sort of thing. Pokémon aren’t animals, most of the time they just behave like people. Part of that is being able to display familiar body language and expressions. And it’s hard to picture the difference between excitement or screaming in existential terror on that Meganium.

We only ever see Pokémon in the Pokémon world. And they are common as hell, hardly "monsters".

The ones from the CGI movie are simply uncanny, i.e. they don't look "real". This >>36959234 does a great job at illustrating how real Pokémon would look like. Especially that Gyarados, Magikarp, and Relicanth. I think Magikarp doesn't look stupid enough, though. Probably because of the serrated teeth.
