It wouldn't work well with Gens VI or VII because they introduced fewer Pokemon, but Gen V introduced enough new Pokemon to make it feel like you have a lot of variety and options, even restricted to that one generation. It also made it feel really cool when you finished the main game and finally started running into old favorites. (B/W2, by the way, has old Pokemon available from the start, it's just B/W that keeps it to the new ones.)
