So I'm playing Pokemon emerald tomorrow for the first time. Never played any gen 3 games actually. I'm a newfag who's first game was diamond. Figured I would just go ahead and start with emerald just to get a good feel for gen 3. If I like it, I'll probably get fire red or leaf green.

Can any of you "hoennbabies" tell me what I can expect? I'm looking forward to it.

The only thing worth pointing out is that the physical special split hasn't happened yet so don't waste your shadow ball TM on a special attacking psychic.

Having not played Emerald specifically myself, what I can say is that Gen 3's smooth 60 FPS is delightful and to suggest that you try the Elite 4 without ice moves- Drake can be a trip.

This game has more than two fire types. I know that might come as a shock, but I think you'll warm up to the concept.
Ice types have it even worse than usual, though.

This is the only notable thing. Easiest way to remember what types are special:
Every special type has an eevee evolution except Dragon.

Which means, yes, Ghost is physical for some reason.

yeah, IIRC there were some codes to activate tickets in-game to "travel" to event islands.

Kek. I will say as much as I did, and still do, like gen 4, that's probably the one thing that always pained me every time I'd go back and play through it again.

It's fun and considered one of the best even after all these years for a reason. It has a few mechanical shortcomings due to being too early for Gen 4/5. But unlike Gen 2, Gen 3 pokemon seem specifically made to accommodate those mechanics (example: ghost was still physical so they finally decided to make physical attacking ghosts for hoenn). I hope you enjoy it.

Yes but if you plan to give the Frontier a go after, I'd say reset for an adamant gift Beldum and teach Shadow Ball to it.

Basically you're golden if you have the Duo + DS Lite + Emerald cart.

I thought more on this recently and my only conclusion was they wanted Ghost type attacks to hit Psychics and other Ghosts in their usually weaker Defense stat instead of Sp. Def. Why Dark was only special even though it's meant to hit the same types and has more physical sounding moves, I can't explain.
