If i counted correctly, 49 Kanto Pokemon got new icons (not counting Alola formes).

There doesnt even really seem to be a pattern, since most of them are either fully evolved Pokemon (but not all fully evolved Pokemon got updated icons) and single stage "big" Pokemon like Magmar and Lapras (and again, not all of them got new icons, as seen with Chansey and Tangela).

I really dont get it.
Even if they would have excluded Pokemon that arent fully evolved yet because their final evolutions arent in the game, there still is no reason to leave Pokemon out like Ninetails and Raichu.

What the absolute fuck Gamefreak?

I first thought it was maybe a height thing. Where you only get a new sprite if you're above a certain height.
But Fearow, Muk, and Vileplume are all the same height at 3'11 and only Vileplume got a new sprite. It seems to me like they either played favorites or just got lazy.

Okay, I checked and it's looked like the distribution of new sprites was mainly determined by size. Every fully evolved Pokémon that got a large sprite had a height above 4 feet, then there is a grey area at 3'11 where a species at that height either receives a large sprite (Vileplume) or they don't (Fearow).

Also, Arbok got a new sprite. It's subtle, but it is different from the one it had before.

Muk probably got cut because it's Alolan Form (which is 3'03") wasn't considered large enough to get a new sprite. Sandslash is in a similar situation, with its Alolan Form being 3'11" and its regular form being 3'03". If you give only one of them a large sprite, it would just look weird.

That just leaves Fearow as the biggest issue.

Ekans doesn't have a large sprite and every Legendary Pokémon that received one is already over 4 feet if you discount Mew, which is a Mythical, so I wouldn't say anything on that.

I'd say they were focusing on fully evolved Pokémon, though. Doduo is also over 4 feet and doesn't receive a large sprite.

Arbok, gyarados, and blastoise got really nice ones. Dodrio and Alolan exeggutor are kind of weird but I dig them. Wonder why only certain pokemon got new sprites though.
And beedrill is the only pokemon that can mega evolve without a new sprite, what's up with that?
