Has /vp/ had any luck buying “real” Pokémon cartridges on eBay/Amazon? For example, I wanna buy Ruby but I wanna eventually be able to transfer my Pokemon from Ruby to diamond and black and so on but I’ve heard you can’t from a reproduction cartridge. Are these “authentic” cartridges actually as they say they are?

I got my legit copy of Ruby from Gamestop. The cartridge shell was cracked all to shit, and had to be replaced, though.
Got Diamond and Black from Gamestop, too.
Idk their track record, but I've had a pretty good experience with them.

Nope. Almost every copy on eBay is a reproduction cartridge, and will either not be recognised by a DS (preventing transfer) or have the "internal battery has run dry" message, preventing you from saving progress

Just do some research on the seller before buying.
I've purchased all of collection off eBay from sellers and have had no issues with reproduction carts.

the internal battery message is normal. Batteries run dry all the time. Repros say "game can be played" every time you boot it up instead.

You need to be able to tell the difference on sight. Look at the ESRB "E" and try to see the proper printing on the motherboard slot. Also try to see if you can see the number impression in the sticker and the foil. Google is your friend. Make sure the images are good and accurate.

For sellers look for random dudes that sell a lot of video games or random stuff they find in thrift shops.

If they're selling multiples it's a bootleg

I managed to find a legit emerald on ebay, I just looked at the more expensive listings and made sure the sticker on the front was legitimate.

Not always. They can be sold pretty cheap. I got mine for $20, and it's real.

What OP needs to do is find a seller that shows the ROM board.

Idk guys, this seller seems pretty legit. He wants 22 bucks each for sapphire and ruby and around 30 for emerald. I checked his profile and he has nothing but positive reviews saying “thanks this is legit” and “100% authentic” all across the board. I even messaged him about if you could transfer between games and he instantly replied to me saying they were real copies and that you could transfer. He even replaced the batteries to make the clocks in-game work

Here's a picture of every gen 3 game for reference. Gray cart is Pokemon Ruby, the original shell got fucking smashed
All of these boards are legitimate, and this is the easiest way to spot real games.

Another way to tell other than this >>36973723 that I know is to look for a white rectangle like marking on the back on the left of the motherboard. Pic related is my fire red and emerald

amazon was fakes as far as the eye could see last time i looked. ebay you want to make sure its in the used category, and they should have photos of both the 'nintendo' printed on the circuit board, the triwing screw, and the little indented serial stamp on the label should just barely be visible (hard to tell with crappy lighting sometimes, dont buy if youre unsure)

There can be variations (2 that I'm aware of) about what is printed on the motherboard near the connectors. I have two legit copies of frlg with different printing. Otherwise the motherboards are the same.

Not true. The printing tells you what version, and what country the game belongs too. granted the GBA isn't regionlocked, so I guess it really doesn't matter.

Emerald and Firered tend to get really scarce sometimes, because they're the most popular.
Sapphire sometimes, too, but Ruby is usually readily available.
