The alien invasions angle would allow them to reach folks who wouldn't touch Pokémon but enjoy a good sci-fi flick, while "misunderstood beings from another dimension" has its own appeal as well.

Anabel makes a good female lead whose appearance can be "Hollywood Normalized"--I.E. get rid of purple hair whilst keeping the nostalgia draw she represents recognizable. (Side note: also an opportunity to give us "canon" irl representations of the Hoenn Frontier Brains and Scott. Now I want John Goodman as Scott.)
This movie even has character death! The dude who dies is simply an anonymous Faller, so if enough of them are introduced in a way that the audience cares about a large handful of them, WHAM important named character goes bye-bye completely subverting expectations from a Pokémon movie.
