I cannot believe anyone thinks that that art style would look good/natural amongst real-ass people.

Maybe if the film was on some roger rabbit shit where the "real world" and the "pokemon world" were two separate dimensions/realities that were clashing then they could go with pokken or smash designs and it wouldn't look out of place.

But as the movie stands, you either do it the way the film did which is hit or miss but mostly great, or you make the entire film CG with no live-action elements whatsoever, which general audiences would be less interested in.

The designs in the movie are literally the sugimori art with shitty fur/scales
They didnt change any designs, just the textures. They look exactly like the pokemon they are.

Honestly I think a heavier fantasy setting and approach with Jim Henson style puppets would have been best, but that is never going to happen in this day and age.

Came here to post this. We've reached a point in CGI technology where you don't need to use the cartoony art style as a crutch since the tech has been available for years to make pseudorealistic CGI. In my mind, I'd rather have FF13 style CGI in a real-life setting as opposed to pokken or smash style.
