The secrets have a part in it, but it's mainly what >>36979221 said.
Hoenn is masterfully designed to move the player around the region seamlessly. You're constantly crossing over your own path and revisting areas you've already been to, but there's not a single point in the game where you truly have to backtrack. You're almost always given a choice between taking a very quick shortcut back to where you need to be, or taking a detour through a brand new area that just opened up to you. It's honestly masterful.

It's very high quality, I agree.
Even some minor stuff that I'm not sure they cared for seemed to work: in emerald, if you ride the bike right in front of the day care back and forth, you can go in a straight line all the way from Verdanturf town to the beach in the edge of Mauville, it is very convenient to hatch lots of eggs. It just seems as care put into the game that would satisfy any kind of gameplay.

I remember as a kid accidentally stumbling into bottom left part of this route where you get ambushed by the Swimmers and thinking it was the coolest shit.

Alola was a straight fucking line. They literally had gates in the road with people standing there saying "you can't go this way until you beat the local trial." There was one part where there wasn't even a gate, just some girl with a Stoutland saying "oh sorry we are looking for hidden items, you can't use this entire street right now come back later."

How could a game about island hopping and exploring remote jungles and mountains feel so linear?
