>>36984787Because Nintendo knew that they couldn't have forced players to physically swing around the Switch to catch Pokemon, and they wanted to make sure the game had compatability with all 3 modes of play. Using it in handheld mode is like if you play Smash Bros. with a Wii Remote alone. Yeah, technically you can do it, but the game was obviously not designed around doing that and that you can do it at all was just a concession made for the sake of convenience.
One of the main points of LGPE is to give players a sense of immersion by having them use their Joycon's motion controls to simulate throwing a Poke Ball. Obviously the game wants you to use those motion controls as it's part of the purpose of the game.
Would I rather just play it with my Pro Controller I play literally everything else with? Of course. Do I understand why it's not allowed? Also yes.
