It's to make money. The illusion of choice always attracts more buyers. The sales of the games with two versions available are always way higher than the single version games.

Anyways, to answer your question, usually one version has certain Pokemon you can't find in the other, and vice versa. It's just something to make more money and encourage trading.

some games have enhanced versions so you dont have to buy the paired one
play Emerald or Platinum so you dont have to touch the previous game
FRLG and HGSS are fantastic remakes so no need to play RGBY and GSC
ORAS wasnt a good remake, if you play Emerald (a Morimoto game, he's famous around here for adding shit ton of content) ORAS will feel underwhelming, however played by itself is not that bad for a pokemon game, just too easy like XY.
SM has better story, USUM has a worse story but more and improved features (and active online). Both games linear as hell and habdholdy unfortunately.
That's what you need to now.

Lol what. How new are you? They always pull that shit. Every game has a third version (or sequel) that gets released a year later except for XY. Red and blue had yellow. The only gen waiting doesn't work was gen5 because it was an actual sequel.

If you're a casual player, Ultra Moon is not much better than Moon. In fact, I'd argue it's worse because a lot of the high points of the story is pushed aside in Ultra Moon for new, forgettable content. You're not missing much at all.

FRLG introduces more types, a better Pokemon selection, various balance changes and bug fixes and exclusive to FRLG, the Sevii Islands which is an optional side area full of places to explore and new Pokemon to obtain.
Part of the reason this board is taking such a piss out of the new Switch game is because it actually has less content than FRLG despite being even more expensive and on better hardware.
FRLG is a great starting point, give it a shot.

FRLG is less of a mess than RGBY. Honestly, I don't see the reason to play G1 anymore, unless on VC. You can't also have nostalgia factor if you are this new.

its an update of Blue (Japanese third version of Red & Green, released in the west split as Red & Blue) to Gen 3 standards with more content
HGSS is an update of Crystal to Gen 4 standards with more content
ORAS is an "update" to Gen 6 standards of RS that ignores every single improvement and content Emerald added for some reason and even dumbed down content that was in RS. If you play RSE specially Emerald is really not worth to play ORAS.
