did anyone else get their first gyarados by grinding the salesman's magikarp from mt. moon to stay the same level as your party?
It's probably one of my greatest memories from the old games when it finally evolved and became my strongest teammate

One of the best example of how Flying type was a mistake from the get go.
It's all over the place. Think of all the combinations we could have if things that fly didn't have to have it or Levitate. Or neither, like Volcarona.

Both Gyarados and Persian were niche picks in OU, although persian had a much better niche.

Gyarados had great stats and movepool in gen 1, giving it a very powerful hyper beam as well as thunderbolt and blizzard. But it was vulnerable to prevalent thunderbolt, carried by very common Zapdos, Jolteon and Gengar.
