I think there was a part with a Team Galaxy grunt you had to find before some Slowpoke or Psyduck would move out of a path that was also an issue for many people. Remembering to go to Canalave City after getting Surf might have been an issue too.

When I first got blue version when I was 7 I got stuck in the dark cave. I didn't give though and got through it. Kids today are just lazy

My Coronet is way more of an issue I don't think Pokemon should have been gimped but the mountain is so massive and it's very easy to get lost and there are just so many HMs and all the optional rock climb spots can make it tedious to get around. Rock Tunnel is very small and easy to navigate in comparison. There's a big difference did you even play DPPt?

In general I think the games were kinda innavigable when we were little (I had the same experience with Sapphire several places when I was 7), but that shit only makes shit like caves, forests and underwater exploration that more "big" to my childbrain and the game felt more vast that way.

I don't actually remember where I stopped. The last thing I recall is some town/route with tall grass. Someone more familiar with the game could probably figure out what caused me to give up.

And? Rock Tunnel isn't a hard area it just seems hard because of the darkness meanwhile DPPt's Mt Coronet is like a third of the overall map.

When I was replaying Emerald last year, I had to take a break for a month. When I got back to the game, I just outright couldn't figure out what the hell I had to do to progress the story. After going through all of the towns near the volcano like three times trying to figure out what I missed, it turned out I had to backtrack to an earlier town. Gen 3 had quite a few points that would fuck you over if you forgot your current objective.

I've beaten Platinum and Diamond both plenty of times. That doesn't make Mt Coronet any less frustrating and you clearly never played it. It was irritating to the point that all later games were simplified to compensate the negative reaction.

The only problem with Mt. Coronet is the ridiculous amount of HMs you’re required to use to get through it. If the optional areas were the only ones that were blocked by HMs, it would’ve been fine.

Yeah, a map would have been great while they still had two screens to work with. Maybe they could just get Rotom Dex to just guide players the way to go in caves or add a super guide function like the New Super Mario Bros. games.
