Friendly reminder to those still holding onto the pipedream of a "smaller, handheld-only Switch, pic related is how Nintendo view Switch. It will have better internals/be more powerful and likely try to prevent the hardware hacking currently going the rounds, but actually trying to change the definition of what the Switch is mid-lifecycle is not something they'll try. The remember the shitshow the WiiU was and how confusing it was to the general public, now they're back on the Nintendo train, they're not going to risk dropping them so soon.

What do you think the 2DS was?

Nintendo has almost always taken early adapters for granted and inadvertently incentivized hold-outs – whether by a simple price-cut, an SP/XL/Mini/etc model, or otherwise.

Nintendo has had a series of unfortunate missteps with their console approach, and whenever they borrow from their handheld playbook, it has paid off for them.

The smart money would bet on a mid-lifecycle Switch redux.

A way of selling more of the 3DS unit stock for kids without actually trying to sell the 3D aspect (since most games at that time were dropping 3D, even their own studios). Cry more or better yet, start saving now, you should have the $380-odd to grab a Pokémon '19 Switch bundle on release (it'll even be the new model to boot). But handheld-only it will not be.

The whole point of the Switch is to have a system that simultaneously appeals to people who prefer home consoles and people who prefer handhelds. This approach has been accepted very positively. Making a handheld-only version of the Switch would be a step backwards. The comparison to the 2DS is flawed, since the 3D was never what made the 3DS popular and was outright ignored in some of the biggest titles.

Odyssey's additional moves aren't necessary at any point. You can use Mario's other platforming abilities to accomplish the task.
In BoTW you can disable motion controls outright same for games like Splatoon although I wouldn't advise it.

SMP is the only game on the system that doesn't work with handheld mode.

What a big load of bullshit. The smaller the chip, the more power efficient it is. A last year flagship Snapdragon has like half the tdp of the Tegra.

anyone buying this probably doesn't care about those games anyway. never played splatoon 2 but i imagine the motion controls in that game work as they do with the Wii U's gamepad, so I don't see why you couldn't play this "New Switch" using its internal gyroscope

Now the N3DS is somewhat of a different matter since that's actually better but it came out a pretty long time after the 3DS release.

As for the Switch Mini I'm sure it has its audience but personally I'd play docked anyways, the handheld mode doesn't interest me all that much so I guess I'll wait for the New Switch or whatever to hop on the boat. I guess this model at least fixes the fact that joycons might run out of battery and that they don't always stay synced as well as they should.

It literally is. Anyway, a 835 can already achieve the same performance, with a TDP max of 6.5W (it's a 10nm vs that giant 20nm Tegra). A X1 for comparison has a TDP of 15W.

why is this happening

i actually want the opposite. 3 hours of battery life is pretty gay. if they can't up it to 8+ then i'd rather they just release a Switch Pro that was just a console with Switch guts. Charge 200 or less for it to make up for the fact that it can't go outside or whatever.

All of my DS lite still work perfectly fine. Well, in the hinge department, a couple of the screens have died since I stopped using them but the one I use for RNGing Gen 5 regularly is sitting right next to me in near perfect condition.

It's not the system's fault you're as violent as a two year old with it.

It's being sold entirely without a dock in Japan.

Though I'm also confused why that isn't at LEAST a thing in Canada since we're basically Japan 2.0 in our like of handheld products.

Yes it would. It would still have a USB-C port, it would just have to be locked off from upscaling to prevent overheating which is totally doable.

Well, he's not wrong. DS Lite has a fucked up hinge design, Nintendo even acknowledged that at the time and used to give free repairs to people with broken hinges. Not lying, all my friends (including me) who bought a DSL ended with a broken hinge and eventually a white top screen in around 3 years. Meanwhile my DSi is still holding pretty well to this day.

Developers are required to specify which of the three Switch modes their game can play in as can be seen on the eShop. If it's only playable in docked or tabletop, it's not available on the marketplace.

Boxes would be adjusted to reflect this, and games that work on both systems would have both logos on the box.

Well, we all had the crimson red (just one of my 5 friends had the blue/black one) and they shat the bed. If you stop for a second and look at how the hinges are built you'll notice how fragile they are. That's why they made the DSi and eventually all 3DS versions with a huge bottom part of the top shell being the hinge support instead of 2x0.5mm pieces of plastic.
