The game is basic as fuck and outside of Cut and the defunct since Gen 5 Rock Smash, the HMs are some of the best moves you can teach a Pokemon. Are you stupid? Surf is crazy fucking powerful and Strength is a staple attack for so many Pokemon. Fly is a 90 damage Flying attack. They're stupid because they're nonsensical roadblocks that barely get used. You use Flash like once, Waterfall once, Defog once, Whirlpool once, Strength maybe a few times. You use Fly and Surf as actual travel that they might as well just fucking be seamless travel. The periods you get Cut and Flash are still early enough that you won't have a full party anyways.
And it's still absolutely mindbogglingly stupid that a fucking skinny branch is still a roadblock in the 3D era. There's at least 30 pokemon that can learn Surf that are big enough to ferry a person and there's who knows how many Pokemon physically strong enough to push a fucking boulder. Why not try making less retarded roadblocks for once and being creative instead of using the same rehashed garbage that passed for okay 20 years ago when the games where you had to use your imagination to fill in every blank?
