>>37018651In the indigo league they didn't want Ash to beat him to continue the rivalry but Ash still had to beat him somehow so Gary lost before Ash and they never faced each other which was a good enough way to go at it. Sadly for Johto they did absolutely nothing with Gary until the end and they became friends and lost to Ash in the league ending the rivalry.
Hoenn had Ash without a Rival but then for Sinnoh they brought Gary back and he was a badass, sadly after his first appearance bringing him back to full glory they did absolutely nothing with him, the only upside is Ash had a good rival that season. Maybe one day but basically if it doesn't happen now with LGPE I don't see it happening ever
