They don't even have to make it open world. Just make the routes look more organic. They made a step in the right direction with Alola, but they could stand to be larger. More complex. Something like with what Dragon Quest 11 does.

The overworld of Dragon Quest XI is pretty ugly to be honest, but I get what you mean. I mainly blame the 3DS limitations for the routes being so empty in the last 2 generations, with the Switch in theory they have multiple times more power.

Oh yeah. I'm not asking for them to adopt the uncanny realism. Just...give me something that instills more confidence than a tile for tile cheap remake.

They have over 300 now actually. Not that it matters. They had trouble making 2 2D games and they've been making at least 7 3D games since they got a Switch devkit. no way in hell anything coming out before 2022 (starting from 2015) is going to be reasonably done.

This is definitely what gets me the most.

Like even if gen 8 turns things around, hoping for it to be even close to as good as Emerald/HGSS/Plat feels like unrealistic expectations. Let alone anything that’ll surpass any of those.

This is the most powerful IP in existence but there is such little ambition behind every project. There is SO MUCH potential for absolutely amazing games in this franchise but they just don’t go for it.

There doesn't really have to be. They basically have free reign to experiment with fluff unrelated to the spirit of the games as much as they want. It seems like they've been bored sense BW2 and keep trying to change things up in dumb ways just to stay interested. I doubt we'll be seeing a game focused on the core aspects of the series for a long time. I mean, exploration's already been kicked to the curb. Secrets are all but gone. The campaigns are more focused on cutscene centric stories. Strategy is less and less important to the campaigns. They keep pushing for gimmicks like special forms and attacks. It's all a bit divorced from the adventurous games I appreciated.

I don't know, maybe it's because even when it looks big and alive it doesn't have too much to interact with and the monsters are just there. It comes off more as a overly decorated set of hallways rather than a real place. That and the fact they added the ability to jump for no reason and move during battles without a real effect make everything feel more artificial.
