Hello /vp/, I've enjoyed Pokemon roms for years.
But now I want to buy a Nintendo handheld and a Pokemon game and join the Pokemon fandom
to friends, of which i have none

Get a 2DS. They're cheap as fuck and you can play all Gens on it except Gen 3.

2DS is usually cheaper but if you care that much about the 3D effect then sure, go for the 3DS.

It's actually because I'd be able to fold the 3DS and I think small things are cute, why would I want some dumb square when I can have a nice rectangle
Is there any glaring differences between the 2DS and the 3DS, like 2DS having more Pokemon games?

If you hack the 2ds/3ds you can actually play all GBA games in .cia formator even emulating it.

Continue to do so. Citra is a 3DS emulator that allows you to run the 3DS games in 720p or higher with controller support. It has its own separate lobbies for online functions of you want to try trading and online battling. You can try online battling right now too with Pokemon Showdown that doesn't require a download or login info. Yuzu is a Switch emulator that is still somewhat new, so Let's Go isn't 100% compatible (broken label text sometimes, etc), but it's good enough to play through it.
