It really isn't that surprising. Even if you don't agree with some of the design decisions, it's still a nice looking take on a good franchise with a heavy focus on nostalgia and interactions with the Pokemon themselves. Pandering doesn't make a game good, but hell if doesn't do its job.

Personally, I still think it's a bad game and I don't plan on getting it, but I have warmed up to it quite a bit since it came out.
