Picked Charmander first because I thought fire was the coolest type. I still love Charizard, but Venusaur is also good and I picked it several times on replays. The first stages are really solid, and some of the best to this day.
>Gen 2
Picked Cyndaquil because I still was in the fire phase. I ended up liking Typhlosion way more than the other two, and it's still my pick every time I replay Johto. Pretty bland designs overall.
>Gen 3
Started with Torchic in Ruby, but later picked Treecko in Emerald. Both are cool. Mudkip line is alright.
>Gen 4
Weird gen, none of the first stages appealed to me at first, but all three get better as they evolve. Started with Piplup because it was the least bad of the bunch. It was the first time I didn't start with the fire starter. Now I think all three are good. Not great, but good.
>Gen 5
I remember having a better opinion of this trio upon seeing the first stage than I did for Gen 4. I went in blind and picked Snivy. I remember thinking all of the evolutions were underwhelming. They grew on me a bit, but I still prefer to use other Pokemon and box my starter whenever I play through an Unova game.
>Gen 6
This is where I started going in knowing what the evolutions looked like, and picking based on the whole line instead of the first stage. I was leaning towards Chespin at first, then Fennekin, then Froakie. It was weird. The moment they revealed the second stages, my mind was set with Froakie. Greninja is one of the best starters, Delphox is a bit bland. Chesnaught is underrated. Overall a good trio, but they dropped the ball a bit with the final stages.
>Gen 7
Pretty good first forms here. Rowlet was the cutest, Litten felt like the cool starter this time, and Popplio had the most expressive animations. Again, I wasn't really sure what I wanted to pick, but I was leaning towards grass. Last stages are what nudged me towards picking water again. Primarina looks really good.
