So my parents were asking how pokemon grew so big so fast and has still until now remained thevlargest media franchise ever. Can anyone give an objective answer on the specific features of pokemon that has the broad mass appeal?

Because it can be as deep or shallow of an interest as you want it to be. You just want to watch an ep or two of the anime and maybe play GO on the weekends? You can do that. But you could also get into the TCG, play the games for hours and hours, etc.

I think there's just an inherent appeal to cool creatures, and unlike other things that try to recapture the hype, Pokémon's creatures are designed really well and have a lot of varying art styles, so there's a Pokémon for everybody.

It appeals as something both cool and cute. Strategically competing with cool-looking monsters is one appeal, but nurturing and building friendship with cute animals is another. And outside of the core games, the franchise can take any approach it wants.
