Trainers are running around with hexaperfect IV Pokemon, competitive movesets, optimal natures, competitive EV spreads (literally +252 Sp.Atk, +252 Speed tier shit). Some NPCs can Z attack too.
Totems in USUM are factually harder than any gym, elite 4, rival or champion battle in other games.
Even regular encounters are harder because of the Pokemon being able to call for help (I've literally got videos on hand of some autists getting near enough wiped by dewpiders before Totem Araquanid).
Then there's Ultra Necrozma which wiped 90%+ of players who went against it, straight up.
It's by far the hardest game in the series.
