Pokemon movies have had great concepts, but terrible execution.

For example, medieval warfare using armored pokemon is perhaps the most epic idea used, but they had to ruin it with their anticlimactic and forced pacifist plot.

Ash not is the problem, he's just a mascot or more a tool for the plot.
