>>37073224I am not sure how far the comparison can go, since as far as I know, Mario and Sonic are the only major platformers that survive to this day. I will agree, however, that I do think people are foolish to just reject modern platformers since at least Mario has worked well in a 3D format, but Mario's gameplay was conducive to adapting to a 3D environment. Sonic doesn't work as well since speed doesn't translate to the same sprawling environments that Mario has. Ever since at least Unleashed I think, they have attempted to compensate for this by having branching paths that operate much the same as being able to do the platforming challenges in the older games.
The argument is that Sonic's gameplay just doesn't translate well to 3D. It can't be as diverse as Mario, which was always more puzzle related. My argument is related to why Sonic Mania is so great, and that is that the design of the level itself lends to how much fun it is. It designed for you be able to go fast when you need to go fast, and slower when there are more intricate things in play. If they could translate this to 3D somehow, that would be fine, but instead, they think like rom hackers and make levels have abrupt changes in it's design. It doesn't flow at all.
I know all don't say that, and indeed, if it's just the matter that it's 3D that's their problem, then they're just idiots. I think what I said was a more reasonable objection, and it tells something that is just as disturbing as LGPE is for us. They just don't know how to design a Sonic game anymore, and the fans do a better job than they do.
