Whismur. It's a bit underpowered, but it's a three-stage pokemon (which only makes sense for a starter, IMO), gets a bunch of useful coverage and an amazing STAB move. Plus its lackluster speed doesn't hurt nearly as much on an in-game team.

Are there any romhacks which let you pick a starter like this? I'd honestly play that shit to death.

Back when I was a kid playing Silver and first obtained the mystery egg, when it hatched into Togepi I thought it'd be hype and awesome. It was a weak NORMAL type with 1 weird evolution that had the same elemental background as Pidgey or any boring bird. Then came Gen IV which gave us Togekiss. Then Gen VI made it Fairy which finally gave it that magic vibe it always had since the late 90s. Now obtaining and training Togepi feels like I always imagined it should, and Togekiss has been my bro since gen IV.

Sandshrew forever since it was my literal starter. I knew Pokemon was a thing and that lots of other kids were into it, but I was never interested until I got pic related in a Burger King meal. I showed it to my best friend who happened to have the episode with AJ and Sandshrew on tape and we watched it together and I've been hooked ever since.

Zubat. It follows the traditional 3 stage evolution that the usual starters do. Plus, it gives time to bond and build friendship with it to get an eventual Crobat, one of my favorite 'mons.

Weedle. It’s a simple 3 stage evolution, and is easy to evolve, reaching Stage 3 at level 10. In LGEP, it learns Outrage at level 31, and can learn Drill Run. On top of that, Mega Beedrill is a beast. Weedle is obtainable extremely early on- so much so that I made it my starter!

Nidoran male. I like how the entire line looks, I like that they have a rare evolution method, I like how they have a female version that's a different pokemon entirely, I like the moves they learn, I like the moves they CAN learn (which is surprisingly broad; look it up if you haven't before), I like how well-rounded they are statwise, STAB EARTHQUAKE, immune to poison status and electric, available early game at low levels, not too strong not too weak.

Also, in those threads where you talk about what pokemon would live near you if pokemon were real, I can claim it then as well, because it's just a freaking rabbit; they're all over the place where I live.

Nido = needle. Rabbits don't have needles. Actually, it's more like a hedgehog now that I think about it, because porcupine spikes rely on barbs to stick in their target, while some hedgehogs actually cover their spikes in toxic saliva.
