They were clearly not. They were made to sell merch and that's what they did. The fact that they keep coming back just means they still sell merch. Game Freak won't make more precisely because new Megas would overshadow whatever new gimmick they come up with.

I think Megas are fine but only if they continue to make more. Otherwise they should fuck off. It’s stupid that it’s such an important mechanic and limited to a handful of Pokémon from five years ago.

Hell, Alolan Forms got dropped within the SAME GENERATION because they wanted the focus to be on Z-Moves Exclusively.
