They had so much more personality and much more dynamic poses than the generic skeleton-sharing, stand there awkwardly 3D models we have now.

It's not 3D models that are to blame. It's GF being inept at animating them. 3D models from Stadium till PBR were full of life. Then GF made their own, and they suck.

I agree. I would like 3D a lot better if they weren't so lazy about it. Some of the models are just atrocious, the colors are all washed out compared to sprites, and the idle poses/animations are just so poorly done in a lot of cases.
