Battery on old cartridges; backup?

Hello /vp/

I still have my old copy of Pokemon Yellow from the year 2000. On this copy, I have a Mew, obtained from an official Nintendo event also during the year 2000.

I have just been reading about how the batteries in these old cartridges can die after about 20 years, causing you to lose your save game.

Is this right? And if so, what is the easiest / cheapest way to back up my data to keep my Mew?

20 years is a huge overestimate. it's typically around 7-8 for RBY, and 4-5 for GSC

some flash carts and i think gameshark can back your save up

If keeping the “original data” of that Mew is your goal trade it to a copy of red blue yellow, switch out the battery, and then play it for a few hours to make sure that battery is good. Then trade it back over.

As I say my game is from 2000, and the save file is still working now (18 years later). So I guess I don't have long before it craps out.

That's a good idea, don't know why I didn't think of that.

But then I guess I need:
a) Another working Game Boy
b) Another R/B/Y cartridge (with a decent battery itself, otherwise the Pokemon would get lost when traded over to that game)
c) A soldering iron to replace the battery in the Yellow cart
d) The right battery to replace the original with
e) A link cable (but I've already got one and I think it works for both GB/GBC and GBA, since it has a switch to switch between them)

Damn.

I was thinking of another way. I have an N64, and I think it still works, so maybe I could buy a Transfer Pak, and a copy of Pokemon Colosseum, and then I could move my Pokemon onto that, right?

Lucky. My Crystal was the best one and it only managed to last almost 13 years, giving out in early 2014.

All of the rest of my Gen 1 and 2 games as well as my brothers save batteries died 2005 at latest.

I had a mfg. 1998 red still able to save as of today, removed the battery anyway due to blue's acidly death.

As for events, If one of those save backup things are too much of a pain to find, just get the cheap usb flashcard and trade it to a ROM.

Colosseum breaks trade betwen Gen 3 and 1/2. Best bet is either trade to a second RBY(gameboys are cheap), or have some kind of cartridge reader that cannbackup your save to put onto a computer and even 3DS

You should take the battery out though, backing up if you can. If it leaks it could kill the whole game.
