I've been playing these shits since 1998. I've been close to the competitive scene since at least 2003. I fucking LOVE Pokemon. I just hate the busywork and oblique hoops the games have, up to this point, made you jump through to get a competitively viable team, hoops that this game happens to do away with.
Non-Compulsory wild battles, combined with catch combos, transparent IVs/EVs, and the streamlining of the box system, makes catching and raising pokemon actually fun and engaging, and the Master Trainers make you actually give a shit about how you raise your individual monsters, which isn't something any Pokemon game has required you to do, arguably, since Platinum's endgame.
Again, the game's not perfect. It's too easy, and it's too feature-light, but the entire game, as a whole, is one, continuous, engaging experience, as opposed to past games, which were, especially during the endgame, long, boring slogs punctuated by momentary excitement.
It's not perfect, and it's not the game I'd have made if I was in charge, but it is a good game, and a clear step in the right direction for this series's development. If Gen 8 was literally just this but with more difficulty and a more robust endgame, I'd be perfectly happy
