Your friend starts repeating himself a lot (oras, sm to usum). Then, he watches as someone very similar to him (Pokemon go) gets popular, so he copies what made them popular, and blends it with why you became friends in the first place 20 years ago (Kanto/lpge).
It's kind of sad, I have similar sentiments. But to be honest, I've never been one to replay games except when they are released as remakes. Pokemon's changed a lot, but so have I. I've tried replaying older titles but the thrill and excitement is gone. I played a platinum nuzlocke over the course of 4 months while commuting to work, it was fun but with nothing new to discover there wasn't much hype until I faced the elite 4. I'm currently trying to nuzlocke black 2, but it honestly feels more like a chore than an enjoyable experience.
Idk. I know I'm not the target audience of these games. But after 20 years of the same tired ass formula it's become stale. As much as I'd like to play the next generation, I know that it will just be me beating the game but I and collecting but the new Pokemon before shelving it. We had a good run, especially since it was supposed to be just a fad.
But that's just my opinion, and everyone is entitled to their own.
