Battery on old cartridges; backup

No.37082393 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
I posted this yesterday but the thread died.

TLDR: What's the cheapest / easiest way to prevent my legit Mew on Pokemon Yellow from being lost due to the battery running out?

My Pokemon Yellow is from the year 2000, and so is my Mew.

Main methods that I know about so far:

1) Soldering in a new game battery while the game is running inside a GBA / GBA SP
2) Buying a Transfer Pak and a copy of Pokemon Stadium for N64, and transferring my Mew onto that
3) Buying something that can dump GB cartridge memory to a computer; e.g. the "Joey" made by a guy called "BennVenn", which unfortunately is a bit pricey

Has anybody done this before, and if so which method would you recommend?

I am thinking the N64 method would be the easiest and least hassle. N64 cartridges use flash memory I believe, so once the Mew is on a copy of Pokemon Stadium, then it should be safe on there for a long time. Also the cost should only be about £20 ($26) to get both a Transfer Pak and a copy of Pokemon Stadium.

The soldering method is another good option (roughly the same price, or maybe slightly more, once you've bought a soldering iron, solder, socket bit to open up the cartridge, and new battery) but there's more things that could go wrong. And also it's only a temporary solution because the new battery would eventually run out as well, depending on the quality of the battery used.

Does anyone have experience doing this sort of thing, and if so what do you think is the best method?
