If you can now avoid any and all wild Pokémon, why do you still need Pokémon of your own when exploring the outside world?

You could previously avoid all wild Pokemon battles by using a repel, the reason kids are given a Pokemon is so they have a companion on their journey (and also because they usually want to be a Pokemon master, which is a profession that requires a Pokemon).

Some games mechanics don't reflect on story. For example turn moves is doesn't work like that in a realistic perspective but the game requires to be like that .

For not having random encounters, well you still find Pokemon in the wild and so it's implied that they eventually attack you
