Gens 1/2 are a different canon from gens 3-5 just as gens 6/7 are different yet again. It's like how there are two different Reds yet Blue/Leif are technically also Red, as they don't exist depending on what gender you play. Then there's the whole Green/Leif debacle. Suffice to say, they are technically two different people but occupy the same space, thanks to multiverse bullshit. Which is why Elio and Selene are the same person yet also exist separately.
So from gens 3 and onward, you can claim 'parallel universes' but the original first two games are completely separate. That is until Lets Go fucked everything up.
