You know, I feel like there's a parallel with the Pokemon franchise here. Series peaked early on, just keeps getting worse with features being removed in each game, shills say "b-but there are so many fighters/pokemon!"

No it doesn't it cut more than half the single player content.

Both versions of Smash 4 cut some things and replaced old modes with worse new ones but still had most of Brawl stuff.

Ultimate cut even more and only added 8 new characters some echo's and game play changes.

And Brawl was based off Melee, and Smash 4 was based off Brawl.

Every Smash game except Melee has been built off of the previous one.

I'm fine with the DLC characters they have yet to develop, season passes aren't exactly consumer friendly but I can live with that.
Now, early-buyer bonuses like Piranha Plant is fucking cancer. Now we're talking about content already finished, but deliberately held back from buyers to push them to buy the game early. It's only marginally better than pre-order bonuses since it lasts til February. And we're not talking about some cosmetics here, we're talking about a full-fledged fighter.

You're missing the point every game since Melee had cut fighters. This game doesn't and the dev team even said they were given the option to make a brand new engine but opted out. This game is more or less a heavily modded Smash 4 which might explain the lack of single player.

Lack of singleplayer modes is a bit disappointing but this Smash has more content for the normal multiplayer mode than any other.

The real problem is hitstun/knockback scaling and the potential lack of combo game. Also fuck smash 4 ledge mechanics.
