>Were among the few quality games on the most popular, most commercially successful, and least expensive handheld gaming device developed by one of the major gaming companies that ultimately saved gaming >Had a massive marketing push with a four-way simultaneous release of the aforementioned video games, the anime on broadcast television in most part of the worlds, the trading card game, and merchandise/apparel. >Was released during the coveted era of technology when computers were readily available for research and communication purposes, but not easily accessible for home gaming and entertainment. Meaning, computer technology helped spread the information and appeal of Gen I across various users without providing major competition through entertainment options. Gen I was just that lucky golden goose that had everything working in its favor to increase its brand recognition and loyalty. Gen I, on their own standing, had no significant appeal as far as the Pokemon designs go.
Game Freak half-assed many of the designs because they expected this to be just another game project (and didn't anticipate Pokemon ever being this big). Hell, their Japanese names are pretty much straight up English words, puns based on real people or objects, or other nonsensical words with no real meaning. A generic crab named Crab, a generic flying mantis named Strike, an origami creature aptly named after polygons, a flower named Rafflesia, the legendary birds being named Freezer, Thunder, and Fire. And Mew is literally a corruption of meow and nya. Yeah, Game Freak half-assed shit.
