It's legitimately weird that it's the only actual special region based thing that was never removed at all (only added to show off the move to color systems).
Contests should've come in with dress up to go along with it and replaced Shinies (not to remove Shinies entirely like they would but made so that new ones no longer get them since you can dress them up if you want to make them more unique).
An alternative option, though less good since clothes could also replace the randomness to stats, would've been to replace them with breeding merges like an Eevee colored Pikachu if you breed them together. That would've been pretty easy to do actually.
