Japan is very tribalistic and has a notable tendency to prefer its own ethnic themes above all else. The most popular animes in Japan like Sazae-san are completely inaccessible to anyone outside of Japan. And they like it that way.
YKW wasn't intended for global appeal. And the Japanese cultural bent was too inaccessible in the games, and made for awkward and undesirable toys.
To put this into perspective, expecting YKW to take off in the USA is like expecting Fox News Channel to be popular in Japan.The Digimon comparisons are superficial.
