Pokémon in general looks very generic now. The games lost their visual identity in the transition to 3DS. The character designs are basic as hell too.

His later art is still perfectly fine, even better in some cases. Even the overall style is not any different. It's only the official Pokemon art that had very noticable shift from Gen 1-2 to Gen 3 and then beyond.

I could look at a screenshot from RSE to BW2 and know they're Pokémon games. With the 3DS games, it's become less obvious.
