why the fuck does scyther turn into scizor?

it looks like graveler->golem levels of this was supposed to be a standalone monster we just slapped into an evolutionary lineup because gamefreak. is there any lore about this? was scizor supposed to be its own thing?

Beta Scizor was green and looked more like Scyther. They changed it later in development.

Are you blind or just an idiot? Look at Shiny Scizor for a second, when the red is removed he looks just like you'd expect an evolution to look: bigger, stronger and still somewhat different. Keep in mind he evolves via Metal Coat which seems to armor Pokemon during their evolution. A bug shedding it's skin and gaining a different colored exoskeleton isn't that strange.

My take:

Proto-Scizor and Pinsir's scrapped evo originally looked more like Scyther and Pinsir. Then I suppose they decided to make them more like regional counterparts (like Tyranitar to Dragonite) rather than evolutions, so we got finalized Scizor and Heracross. Then at some point they decided Scizor should go back to being a Scyther evo, perhaps because market research showed people generally responded more favorably to new evolutions than they did to brand new Pokémon lines.
