Why are these fuckers so god damn forgettable? It’s not like past Gym Leaders had some big story impact or anything, so it isn’t that. And yet every single generation of Gym Leaders is more memorable. Hell, even the Trial Captains and Kahunas stand out more than this cast of extras.

What went wrong?

For me, all Gym Leaders are forgettable, except for Kanto and Johto (and only because we revisited them a lot and not for nostalgia).

Parodixically, I remember half of these characters because of how easy they are to forget. But in my opinion, no generation has an entirely memorable cast of gym leaders. The only gens that acheive thatbare Gen 5 and 6 because those characters have more screen time and plot importance. And the fact that gen 7 gym leaders aren’t actually gym leaders make them more make them stand out too.

I always forget the knight guy's name. I can remember every elite 4 member except that guy. And the only reason I remember Seibold is because I thought he was the knight guy until I looked it up and found out I had them switched.

In my case, it probably lines up with not really caring about the series too much anymore. I altogether skipped Gen 5.

The only thing that the Kalos leaders suffer is not really having a group of especially memorable aces, something compounded by the fact you're probably playing Gen V in your mid-late teens if you grew up with the series, so you would've blasted through these guys without any real trouble. Add on the most underwhelming Gym battle theme ever, and there's nothing to encourage consolidating these weirdos into your long-term memory.
