>>37133377>disliking something solely because its popular>For example, GreninjaI wouldn't make that comparison. Disliking shillmons is more overexposure, or a resentment of seemingly undeserved popularity. Greninja is the former, incineroar is the latter.
Greninja had a superspecial form added to the anime for stupid reasons, then it was ported into the game as an event which was (to the best of my very limited comp knowledge (read: i haven't touched comp ever in my life because its for big gays)) pretty fucking strong ontop of a pokemon that was already strong thanks to protean and a wide movepool.
Incineroar, owlfags aside, is a very hit or miss design. I really dislike el tigre's design aesthetically, and i find the last 2 gens of starter design philosophy detestable. But for some reason, people seem to like it, a lot. And it becoming the designated shillmon this gen seems to really rile up some people, again, owlfags aside. I was kinda miffed when incineroar was the smash rep, despite having little investment in smash. I just thought that there *had* to be better options, though i can't think of one off of the top of my head.
Disliking it because its popular is like, starters or legendary as a category. Things that most people are likely to attach themselves to by virtue of mere exposure.
Back on topic. Contrarianism on here is mostly just a case of people wanting to be part of a group, an invested conflict they need to be on a side of. Are you part of the LGPE hate train or part of the shill / ebin trolling campaign? Owl or Bara? Genwunner or Unovabortion?
I'm invested in a few /tg/ shitstorms, mostly regarding lewdposting.
Ironically, by detaching yourself from the polarisation, you become your own kind of contrarian, a centrist.
Remember, no matter who/what you are, there's always a buzzword designed to demean your perspective.
