They don't need to do anything, OP. The art style's so generic, there's nothing stopping me from saying those are all little boys crossdressing. If someone feels like being a faggot, there's nothing stopping them. Gamefreak doesn't have to do anything and they'll attract that niche regardless.

Except the game is fairly gender neutral now: it doesn't ask if you're a boy or a girl, but to choose what you look like. Only thing they could do more is stop using gendered pronouns.

Honestly, as long as we still get regular male/female trainers and more customization options, I'm fine if we get shit like gender neutral PCs. More character options is a good thing in my book.

If it becomes a detriment, however, then I'll have a problem.

They included playable females since Crystal because Pokemon became popular with girls.

They included skin tones since XY because Pokemon had a huge international presence by then.

I doubt they're gonna get any more PC than that, because most of Asia, Latin America, South America, Africa, and the Middle East don't give a shit.

Just don’t have a gender option at all, it’s literally completely unnecessary after the games went full 3D. Just start with a blank character and edit it to look like you.
Apple does this with it’s Memoji editor, you never pick a gender, yet in the end result it’s always clear if it’s a boy or a girl. There’s literally no reason why all character creators shouldn’t work like this.
