I don't know if anyone here is interested, but I've been following VGC since 2013 and playing since 2015, and I know a lot about it. Lots of stories about the players I think are interesting, and just stuff about the history of the game that newer players might not otherwise learn about. Some things I'll present as blind items for obvious reasons. I'll post more if anons show interest but the first thing that comes to mind is Wolfe's 2014 worlds run.
Back in 2014 the LCQ existed, which was a tournament before worlds proper that allowed players who finished at the top of the field entry into worlds. For many players this was the only hope they had of getting a worlds invite, since qualifying back then was difficult. Wolfe was a player who hadn't found his stride in 2014, using shit teams like no physical attackers squad that got raped by AV tyranitar, celebrate vaporeon and Mr. Mime. But by the time LCQ came around, he was ready. He'd built a strong team of gothitelle/mawile/snarl scrafty/ludicolo/politoed/specs hydreigon. This archetype with rain/gothmaw was popular in Japan (I think?) and wolfe may have drawn inspiration from Japanese teams. iirc you had to finish top 4 at LCQ to play in worlds, and Wolfe achieved this through brilliant play and a strong team. However, there was one hiccup: the Pokemon company published the teams of the LCQ finalists before worlds. So, everyone knew Wolfe's pokemon, moves, items and even natures. This was seriously bullshit, since average pokemon fans don't give a flying fuck about VGC and VGC players just used the info for scouting. Granted, I support using every available means to win. I'm honestly not even bothered by the spanish player who screen peaked in finals of an internats and won, and was allowed to keep his trophy and continue playing pokemon. I just wish he had been DQ'd for it. If you're dumb enough to not protect your screen you deserve what you get. I tell my opponents at regs to protect their screens constantly.
