As someone who lived through...
- Time machine resitrictions of Gen 1 > 2 trading
- Being unable to transfer from Gen 2 to Gen 3 entirely
- Having a 24 hour refresh time for loading batches of 6 pokemon from Gen 3 to 4
- Moving a box at a time using 2 DS systems to go from gen 4 to 5

I'm TOTALLY ok with paying $5 a year to never have to worry about this shit again. In just 5 min, I had all of my Gen 6 pokemon transferred up and ready for Gen 7. And going from Gen 7 to 8 is also gonna be a 5 min process. This shit is amazing.

The game could easily store the Pokemon in an offline Pokebank and keep the Pokemon stored locally on your system for free with absolutely no charge or bandwidth taken up. They're literally charging you for nothing. The service is a cloud save storage service and it would be nice if it were optional but there's no method other than the bank for transferring Pokemon. If they wanted to do it without scamming people they could make a local Pokebank you can use for free and then charge you $5 a year for cloud storage in case your system breaks and you lose your data. Online storage is the only storage.

Shooting Pokeballs to get 500 monsters into Gen V was nothing when you could do it endlessly, do you even remember how disgustingly slow it was to send 6 Pokemon per cartridge per 24 hours through the PalPark and then having to actually hunt them down and catch them again? They're getting better and better at it, I personally found PokeTransfer quick and painless compared to PalPark, and actually enjoyed it too.
I transferred everything from Gen IV in two days, it took me literally 3 months to send my 385 from Gen III.

It's not a server though, The 3DS has it's own storage space. My 3DS has 32GB. There's no online required for utilizing your systems storage as bank space. The ONLY downside is that if your 3DS breaks you lose the Pokemon in your bank which you could easily say is worth the optional $5 for online storage on the server.

But that's not what Pokemon Bank is. It's also being able to transfer that data between games and consoles. It's the development of the application itself. If you spend a couple hundred thousand to develop something, why wouldn't you charge enough to recoup the costs?

$5 A YEAR is so fucking cheap, and this isn't an "it's expensive shit" argument because it's actually quite nice with 3000 storage space + special Pokemon like Celebi or the Regis + Battle Point rewards.

Its not just storage though, you get things that people who dont pay for bank dont get. Theres the stuff that guy mentioned about the Regis, Celebi and BP, but there were also hidden ability Johto starters and hidden ability Alola starters which, if I remember correctly, is the only way to get them. Plus its just a huge time saver in general if you want to mass move pokemon from one game to another. Also if I didnt have bank my boxes on Ultra Sun would be pretty much full by now, so its really nice to have.

I actually supported this when the idea started. $5 isn't bad to keep the servers. But the keyword is SERVERS. In theory, we're needing their servers so the Bank can check for cheating. (Not judging anyone, mind you, just explaining why I can see why they designed it that way.) But in the end what happened? Cheating is going through anyway, and there are some legit shinies that won't because GF is retarded. So servers are unnecessary. Also one of the selling points of Pokémon is that you play it on the go, but I hope you don't want to transfer anything on a long plane trip!

I don't mind paying for stuff, but this should've been a $10/15 one time thing purchase and the 3DS (and any future machine) should be doing the storing of info. There's zero need for their servers.

This. I made a living pokedex in XY and the first thing I did in ORAS was trade them in and complete the pokedex. Turns out playing through a game with the pokedex complete makes it feel boring and empty, "why bother catching X; I already have it?" It was even worse in SM because I knew Bank was coming so I only bothered catching everything from the 7th gen dex, and alolan formes. Again, why bother catching a gen 1-6 pokemon when I'm, going to batch move them in and complete my pokedex once Bank comes out. It really is a devil's bargain. If you want to destroy a man, give him everything he wants.
