>There's not much to enjoy when the region itself is being pretty barebones like the games and one of the main aspects of the series (battles) just started becoming an afterthought more than anything.I think they used the barebones nature of Alola to their advantage since it gave them the freedom to write their own stories outside of "walking down dirt road until they meet someone" or "exactly what the player does in the game". Also why do battles need to be a requirement? Besides few episodes of the past seasons had any real battle either, just interchangeable encounters with Team Rocket. In fact I'm not even sure if you're right about there being few battles because I'm pretty sure there have been a lot.
