What do we think of the Alola region? It's a pretty unique region since it's segmented, but was it a good design choice?
Every region is known for some defining characteristic (hoenn has too much water, sinnoh is seperated by a mountain, unova is literally a circle), so what will Alola be known for years to come from now?

I hate it. Each island feels small, and since they aren't connected physically it makes the game feel like 4 small adventures rather than a large over arching adventure. It's further compounded by the stupid trials and mini games.

Can't help but feel it's that appeal to smartphones that caused it. The adventure is segmented by the islands, trials and mini-games, giving players solid start and stop points throughout the game.

I guess the same could be said for the 8 badges of older games, I guess, so I don't know. Fuck islands I guess lol

Cutscenes. Aesthetically and in concept, it should be the perfect area for a Pokemon region. I remember being so excited for it back in 2016, but Gamefreak doesn't know how to do 3d, and we ended up with really crappy often-straightline routes

I remember being hyped also. I anticipated Alola to be Hoenn 2.0 and we would be able to sail from island to island, having a grand adventure on the seas. These games, I thought, would have a huge focus on exploration as a departure from all the handholding from gen 6.

Holy shit was I ever wrong. Seriously, what's the point of having segmented islands in the ocean if you can't even cross the fucking ocean at all?

Retarded map spoilers you the whole layout of the islands as soon as you get Rotomdex, legit too small, routes are for the most part bad, Poni island is a fucking joke considering Melemele is a trash tutorial island, barely any city, most interesting point is Sophocles' autism research center. Hau'oli shouldn't have been the biggest city, because it's a real joke even without comparing it to Lumiose or Castelia since that's unfair. Awful encounter rates for Alolan pokemon like Mareanie.

What everyone else said about the "one adventure but cut into four" thing, and I hate eternal summer so it's automatically shit for me. Also, boring towns and architecture coming from XY. Feels more like a side area (like the Sevii Islands) rather than an actual region.

That vulcan part was shit, though. There wasn't a cave, you just enter one side to exit by the other. What lazy shit was that?

Not a fan of Alola. The region feels so lazy and forced. "Pokemon but in Hawaii" is a bad concept and it was executed terribly. If a region is based on a real world place, it should be "inspired" by that place not a literal copy paste of real features into the game. Kalos and Unova weren't the best regions, but they didn't force New York and France down your throat like this one does with Hawaii.

Very good region, Loved the transistion from most popular at the begining to wild one at the end. It was like a vacation.
I am the one who liked how rare new pokemon were and I HOPE next will make new monsters harder to get as well.
Very beautiful place, but sadly destroyed by being WAY too linear (besides that desert everyone forgot to visit.

Unova, Kalos and Alola feel like "theme park" versions of the respective areas they were based on. Probably because when GF staff visited them for research, that's exactly what it felt like.

Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh feel more authentic because GF has a more nuanced understanding of Japanese culture and first-hand experience of those regions.

The design of Kanto itself is a commentary on the rapid urbanisation that consumed the environemnt during Satoshi Tajiri's childhood.

In comparison, Alola is about how funny it is that people eat Malasadas.

Nah, any series where the game is a bunch of smaller less connected areas rather than one big one is generally more linear since areas are smaller. Happened here, happened in Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, and in Metroid Prime 3. It's mostly a symptom of the design, though Alola could have had more going on.

I mostly like how Alola goes from tourist trap to more rugged and isolated the further into the game you go. Especially as you head through the third island towards Po Town and how bleak it gets.
